Prerequisite Skill Level:  Participants must know standard basic cast off,  and basic stitches such as knit, purl, yarn over, K2tog.

Australian Dye Day--Yarn Blanks and Skeins

Want to create a one-of-a-kind yarn? Then this is the workshop for you!  We will be using Australian dyes with unique colors and hues.  A yarn blank is a knitted fabric of two strands of white yarn which you will paint using sponge brushes and dye. You will paint whatever design and colors you want…but when you unravel the yarn blank and knit/crochet/weave your project, the colorway emerges in its own unique configuration.  It’s not only fun painting the blank, but finding out what eventually results in the worked project!    Or paint some skeins in whatever colorway you want!

Cost includes all materials—two blanks or skeins, dyes, gloves, etc.   Additional blanks and skeins can be purchased separately if you want to dye more than two.

Instructor:  Harry Wells

Date:  March 3, 2012,  Noon-4:00 pm

Cost: $65.00, includes two yarn blanks or skeins and all supplies

Limit: 8 persons

Sweater Basics and Finishing with Ann Budd (2 day workshop) Session 1

In this two-day workshop, we’ll follow the pullover instructions in The Knitter’s Handy Book of Sweater Patterns by Ann Budd. The sweater will be worked in four pieces—one back, one front, and two sleeves. To minimize the amount of knitting, all students will work an infant-size sweater in worsted-weight yarn. To prepare for the class, students will knit the four pieces to the armholes and choose between drop-shoulder, modified drop-shoulder, and set-in sleeve shaping, and between round and V-neck shaping.

You will learn:

· determining the correct garment size

· measuring a gauge swatch

· calculating even spacing of increases or decreases

· centering a pattern stitch

· working selvedge stitches

· paired increases and decreases

· picking up stitches around a neckline

· an elastic bind-off appropriate for ribbed necklines

· seaming

· blocking

· tips and tricks along the way

INTERMEDIATE KNITTING SKILLS REQUIRED.

Instructor: Ann Budd

Date: May 5 & 6 (Sat & Sun), 11:00 am-6:00 pm (one hour for lunch break, lunch not

                                                                                provided.)

Cost: $200.00

Materials: The Knitter’s Handy Guide to Sweater Patterns (or make arrangements to share with a friend); The Knitter’s Companion or other technique reference book (optional but helpful); 2 skeins of worsted weight yarn such as Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Worsted or Cascade 220 (you may need only 1 skein but you want to be sure not to run out); size 7 or 8 straight needles plus a set of double-pointed one size smaller for neckband; tape measure; calculator; tapestry needle; stitch holders; round stitch markers and removable stitch markers.

Homework

Back

With worsted weight yarn and appropriate needles (your choice of size 7 or 8), cast on 42 stitches. Knitting the first and last stitch of every row for selvedge stitches (these will facilitate seaming later), work the edging of your choice (rib, garter st, seed st, etc.) for 1½”, then work in stockinette stitch (knit right-side rows; purl wrong-side rows) until piece measures 5” from the cast-on edge. Place stitches on holder.

Front

Work same as back.

Sleeves (make 2)

Cast on 20 stitches. Knitting the first and last stitch of every row, work the edging of your choice for 1½”. Choose between drop shoulder, modified drop shoulder, and set-in sleeve style. Continue as described below for your choice.

For Drop Shoulder or Modified Drop Shoulder Styles:

Change to stockinette stitch and increase 1 st at each end of needle (inside selvedge stitches) every 2 rows 9 times, then every 4 rows 2 times—42 stitches. Work even until piece measures 5” from cast-on edge.

For Set-in Sleeve Style:

Change to stockinette stitch and increase 1 st at each end of needle (inside selvedge stitches) every 4 rows 5 times—30 stitches. Work even until piece measures 4½” from cast-on edge.

Harmonia's Rings Moebius Cowl Sweater with Sivia Harding

The Harmonia’s Rings cowl, which uses Cat Bordhi’s Moebius cast on to achieve the mysterious spiral neck shape, features an easy and addictive self-pleating knit and purl stitch pattern that creates concentric rings reminiscent of ancient architecture. The workshop includes many techniques: the Moebius cast on, beaded picot bind off, knitting the texture pattern in the round, shaping within the Moebius structure, and ways to customize the pattern to fit any body type.

In this workshop, we will be knitting the Harmonia’s Rings tunic sweater! After many requests, the Harmonia’s Rings Cowl has been re-engineered to fit seven sizes. The addition of a fitted body to the drapey yoke makes a world of difference! Because of the drape of the yoke, this design accommodates a wide range of body types. Wear it alone or wear it layered… the perfect compliment to your wardrobe through the seasons.
